![]() ![]() ![]() This is an intriguing and novel device, but we have a problem: it’s not that Archie Ferguson isn’t a very interesting character it’s that he’s four not very interesting characters. Archie Ferguson gets himself born one day in 1947 and then, for reasons that become clear 800 pages later – by which point the knackered reader may not greatly care – his life splits into four narrative threads, as in some theoretical quantum-multiverse thing. But wait: there isn't just one hero there are four, except they're all the same hero – sort of. Paul Auster's first novel in seven years, 4 3 2 1, begins with just such a leisurely account of its hero's grandparents. The suspicion of authorial presumption is stronger when the book in question is a brick of a thing, harking back to the days when folks had little else to distract them, so one may as well kick off with 50 pages on the hero’s grandparents. ![]() Every book that gets written is an act of insolence, in that for the time it takes to read we are asked to neglect the storehouse of canonical masterpieces whose perusal would fill any human lifespan. ![]() ![]() ![]() While Dougherty provides plenty of macro-level research about housing across the nation-and especially in San Francisco-the major strength of the narrative occurs at the micro level. In addition, the price and location of housing affects quality of education from preschool through high school exposure to clean air and drinkable water racial and ethnic segregation crime rates and, perhaps most significantly, the availability of employment at a livable wage. ![]() ![]() Perhaps no other phenomenon drives income inequality as starkly as housing. A New York Times economics reporter illuminates why affordable housing is scarce for tens of millions of Americans, with a focus on the San Francisco metro area.Īs Dougherty explains in his first book, the cost of buying a single-family home or even renting a small apartment in a convenient, desirable location is one of the most pervasive conundrums facing Americans today. ![]() ![]() ![]() While some people clash, other people like each other far too much… When their happy families façade starts to unravel, every one of the adults finds themselves wondering if it's time - finally - to grow up? ![]() Now, join the bestselling author for three very special live events to celebrate the publication of her new novel, Grown Ups. The book tells us of the Casey’s: an extremely glamorous, and decidedly happy family who spend a lot of time together – birthday parties, anniversary celebrations, weekends away. Under the surface, though, conditions are murkier. ![]() Marian Keyes, one of the most successful Irish novelists of all time, has been writing hilarious, internationally-bestselling fiction about modern women in the modern world for over twenty years. Her books deal variously with contemporary issues, including addiction, depression, domestic violence and the glass ceiling, but are always written with compassion, hope and her trademark Irish humour. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() While he doesn’t yet have an infection in any of his feet, overgrown hooves can lead to a multitude of other issues. Luckily, we’ve been able to avoid the need to trim hooves since we picked up our sheep, but it looks like the time is coming soon, at least for Thor. Sheep who are grazed on pasture or on rocky, drier soils may not have to have their hooves trimmed as often as those that are raised in wetter areas or housed indoors. While hoof growth is affected by many factors, such as genetics and soil moisture, most sheep do eventually need to have their feet pared down. ![]() However, this pseudo-medical inspection did lead us to the realization that it was probably time to trim his hooves. My husband and I were able to wrangle him into submission long enough for us to inspect the foot, and we noticed that while it was packed right full of dirt and mud, he didn’t seem to have any kind of infection. A few weeks ago, I happened to notice that our Icelandic ram, Thor, was limping, considerably favoring his rear right leg. ![]() ![]() ![]() He crushed out the last of his cigarette, but didn’t take a single step to leave the crowded train station. She is condemned to Carnage Island where she ultimately thinks she is going to die. When she finally gets the opportunity to shift and meet her wolf for the first time, it isn’t what she expected. (Side note, when you wake your husband up from laughing and you do not have a good reason behind it, he is a bit cranky.) The story in the book centers around Clove, our rejected wolf. I was enraptured with the characters and actually laughing out loud at some of the things that were happening. It took me about 16% of the way through this book to realize it wasn’t all smut, and by then it was far too late.
